Laute-DNA

Die vier Bausteine, die den Laute-Sound ausmachen — Ursprung, Struktur, Instrumente und Harmonik.

01

Ursprung & Entwicklung

The lute descended from the Arabic oud and entered Europe through Moorish Spain by the 13th century. During the Renaissance (1400–1600), it became the dominant instrument for both solo music and song accompaniment. In the Baroque era (1600–1750), it evolved into larger forms before being gradually supplanted by the keyboard.

02

Songstruktur

The lute has a rounded back made of thin wood strips (ribs), a flat soundboard with a carved rosette, and gut strings in courses (pairs). Renaissance lutes had 6–10 courses; Baroque lutes grew to 13–14 courses with extended bass strings. The sound is warm, intimate, and quickly decaying — perfect for private music-making.

03

Typische Instrumente

Lute music was written in tablature — diagrams showing finger positions rather than standard notation. The surviving repertoire is enormous: thousands of pieces from Dowland, da Milano, de Visée, Weiss, and Bach. Genres include fantasias, preludes, dances (pavane, galliard, allemande, courante), and song accompaniments.

04

Harmonik & Hooks

The lute revival began in the early 20th century and gained momentum with historically informed performance (HIP). Julian Bream, Paul O'Dette, Hopkinson Smith, and Nigel North brought the lute back to concert halls. Today the lute community thrives globally, with makers, festivals, and a growing audience for early music.

Laute-Spektrum entdecken

Sechs eigenständige Subgenres innerhalb von Laute — jedes mit eigenem Tempo, Klangbild und Charakter.

Renaissance Lute

60–100 BPM1400–1600

Solo fantasias, intabulations of vocal music, and courtly dances. Francesco da Milano, John Dowland, and Luis de Narváez composed the golden-age repertoire.

Baroque Lute

60–110 BPM1600–1750

French style brisé (broken chords), elaborate suites, and German virtuosity. Silvius Leopold Weiss and Robert de Visée defined the Baroque lute's refined voice.

Lute Song

50–90 BPM1590–1630

Voice with lute accompaniment — the art song of the English Renaissance. John Dowland's melancholic songs ("Flow My Tears," "In Darkness Let Me Dwell") are masterpieces of emotional expression.

Dance Suites

70–120 BPM1500–1750

Sequences of paired dances — pavane/galliard, allemande/courante, sarabande/gigue. Each dance has a distinct character and tempo, forming a musical journey.

Theorbo & Archlute

50–100 BPM1580–1750

Extended-neck lutes with long bass strings for continuo accompaniment and solo music. The theorbo's deep bass adds gravitas to Baroque chamber music.

Contemporary Lute

50–120 BPM1960s–Present

New compositions for lute by living composers, plus crossover projects with jazz, folk, and electronic music. The lute finds new voices.
